Mr. Michael C. Cartolano, chairman of the H. Frank Carey Art Department, has been teaching art since 1989. He has been at H. Frank Carey High School since 1996, serving in the position of chair since 2004. Over the course of his career at Carey, he has taught Art 8, Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, and Photographic Arts. He has also taught ESL Art, PALS Art, and Transitional Art. Additionally he helped pioneer the Digital Design program, working hard to create and teach the very first Digital Design I and II courses in the district. He has participated in curriculum writing for Digital Design I and II, Media Arts, and AP Studio courses. Mr. Cartolano has been honored with the Dads' Club Teacher of the Month Award in 2001, the PTSA Founder's Day Award in 2002, H. Frank Carey's Teacher of the Year Award for the 2002-2003 school year, and the Howard W. Nordahl School-Community Service Award in May of 2006. He remains committed to the extra-curricular program at Carey, having served as advisor for the Film and Photography Club, the M.I.K.E. Club, the "Canstruction" Committee, and as a committee chairperson for Relay for Life.
Mr. Cartolano strongly believes that art education has the broad potential to positively impact and even transform students' lives.
