  • Course Selection Process 2019

    Dear Parents:

We are heading into a very important part of the year as students will select and choose next year’s classes in the next few weeks. The course selection process allows students to select the courses they feel will provide them with the best opportunity to succeed and transition to college or the work world. During this process, students will sit down with their guidance counselor to select the courses they want to take.

At SHS, we expect that all students take courses which challenge them and put them in a position to succeed in college. We feel as if every student has the ability to achieve this. Everyone, however, has different interests, goals, and needs. Our focus is to ensure that students are able to select a schedule that plays to their strengths while also providing them a foundation to succeed in college and the work world. This foundation is the result of a strong and challenging schedule.

Each student will sit down with his or her guidance counselor to see the courses that have been recommended. Students may select these courses or select courses they are interested in. Ultimately, students should take courses that stretch and challenge them. This is why it is very important that students and families review the course catalog. Parents are encouraged to view these at:  https://www.sewanhakaschools.org/Page/18177

Some points to consider when deciding on courses are:

    • Grades are very important. Students should strive to achieve the highest possible grades in all courses.
    • AP courses provide students with college level learning experiences. Every student should take at least 1 AP course while at SHS.
    • Students should take four years of math and science.
    • Students should challenge themselves with courses that are slightly above their level without compromising their grade point average (GPA).
    • Students should take as many difficult classes as they can handle.

    Parent Portal Information and Updates

    Dear parents and guardians:

Student schedules will be available by Wednesday, August 29, 2018. A connect-ed message will be sent as a reminder. To see and access your child’s class schedule, report card, progress reports, assignments, grades and attendance you may log into the Parent Portal.

For those of you with existing parent portal accounts, you may click on the link located under the ‘Site Shortcuts’ column of the Sewanhaka CHSD website. The direct link to the parent portal login is: https://parentportal.nasboces.org/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Over the summer it becomes common for parents and students to forget their login credentials. If you have forgotten your password, please click on the ‘Forgot Password?’ link next to the Login button. This will take you to the page with the directions for recovering your password.

If you need to register for the parent portal because you do not have an account yet, you will click on the link ‘Parent Portal Registration’ also located in this box. The link will take you to a page that will guide you through this process. And if you have any questions about the parent portal, you can click on the ‘F.A.Q.’ link. Here you will find many of your questions answered.

Is there an App for the parent portal? If you are interested in viewing the portal on your smart phone you will need to enter the following web address into your phone’s browser: https://esd-connect.mhric.org/mobile/parent  to get the log in screen.

To learn more about the parent portal, please take a moment to watch this brief video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1mOpl_ZjSU

Lastly, if you have questions or need assistance about the parent portal, please contact our guidance department or assistant principal’s office the week of August 28.

    Sincerely,

    Chris Salinas
