Sewanhaka Hosts Fundraiser for St. Jude

The Cosmetology Program at Sewanhaka offered salon services after school on Feb. 15 to raise money for the not-for-profit organization St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The students, under the supervision of their teachers Mrs. Maryanne Contarino, Ms. Ta Juana Portier, Mrs. Theresa Strumpf, Ms. Grace Jennings and Ms. Olimpia Nicholls, offered professional services such as haircuts, blow dry styling, hair color, highlights and manicures. Both classroom salons were busy taking care of more than 40 clients that consisted of friends, family members, teachers and community residents.

The students were highly motivated to make this fundraiser a success, distributing flyers to each of the high schools within the district. They also distributed flyers to their family, neighbors and friends. Through their efforts to promote the program and service to so many people in a short amount of time they raised more than $865 for the organization.

The students in the Career and Technical Education programs are always encouraged to become involved in various projects that give back to the community.  This fundraiser was the perfect opportunity for them to work in a true salon situation and have all donations go to such a remarkable cause.

The cosmetology department would like to thank all of the people who came to help make this fundraiser a huge success including Principal Dr. Chris Salinas and Mr. Frank Geritano, assistant principal for Career and Technical Education.
