Class of 2018 Bids Farewell to H. Frank Carey
Members of H. Frank Carey’s senior class along with their family members and friends celebrated their commencement at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University on June 24.
Those in attendance heard speeches from Class of 2018 senior class co-presidents Amanda Gunn and Lauren Pitz, student government president Gabriella Fiumaro and salutatorian Alyssa Cassese, who told fellow classmates that they inspire her.
“We are a bunch of passionate, creative people who follow our dreams no matter what other people have to say about it. Our defining characteristic is our drive, our passion and our diversity of interests that makes it so hard to stick us in a box as being ‘academic,’ ‘athletic’ or ‘artistic.’”
During his valedictory address, Dean Macchia urged his peers to look forward to the future.
“I know that for many of you, this moment is bittersweet, but I would like you all to think about the incredible opportunities and endless possibilities that lie before us,” he said. “When you think about it, we really can become just about anything we want to as long as we are willing to work for it.”
Principal Christopher Fiore congratulated the graduates and presented the James A. DeSonne Award to Amanda Gunn and Lauren Pitz, the John E. London Award to Connor Lynch, the Principal’s Award to Frank Porcasi and the Hall of Fame Award to Gabriella Fiumaro.
New York State Senator Elaine Phillips and Sewanhaka Central High School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie also addressed students. Dr. Ferrie encouraged them to persevere through whatever challenges they face.
The momentous ceremony was accentuated with beautiful music by the senior high band and chorus, as well as outstanding solo performances. It concluded with the conferring of diplomas and the tossing of their graduation caps upward.
