Sewanhaka Students Celebrate Diversity at International Night

On Nov. 16, more than 400 students, faculty members, families and community members celebrated the annual International Night at Sewanhaka High School.

This very special night, organized by the world language department, French, Italian, and Spanish club advisers, and Mr. Jorge Gonzalez, was an expression of the culture and diversity that flows through the hallways of this school on a daily basis. The excellent and entertaining hosts were Paula Aquino and Adam Rodriguez.

There were several cultures from around the world on display at the celebration: Afghanistan, the Caribbean, France, India, Italy and various Latin American countries. One of the most impressive acts was from our own talented staff member, Mr. Henry Simpkins. His magnificent voice was met with thunderous applause.

The evening was both enjoyable and enlightening, because celebrating our differences in addition to our common interests helps to unite and educate us all. As Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.”
