Recognitions and Holiday Tunes at Board Meeting

Members of the board of education celebrated the district’s music students during the Dec. 17 meeting.

The evening began with Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane recognizing students who were selected as participants and/or alternates for the 2019 New York State School Music Association All-State Conference, which took place Dec. 5-8. The accepted students were Vincent Tavernese, a trumpet player from H. Frank Carey High School, who was chosen for the Symphonic Band; Ruben Fonseca, a snare drum player from H. Frank Carey High School, who was chosen for the Symphony Orchestra; Tyler Palma, a tenor 2 vocalist from Floral Park Memorial High School, who was chosen for the Mixed Chorus; and Tochi Ukegbu, a jazz soprano vocalist from Elmont Memorial High School, who was chosen for Vocal Jazz. The recognized alternates were Gianna Ingersoll, Jessica Ringston and Yican Zhang from H. Frank Carey High School; Shawn Springer from Elmont Memorial High School; and Leah Lalwani and Olivia Wong from New Hyde Park Memorial High School.

Then, students from all five high schools sang “Deck the Halls,” “Joy to the World,” “Carol of the Bells,” and “Jingle Bell Rock.”
