District Participates in 2020 Vans Custom Culture Competition

Sewanhaka Central High School District Career and Technical Education Department, in collaboration with Sewanhaka High School Art Program, participated in the 2020 Vans Custom Culture Competition as one of 500 high schools nationwide.

Once chosen to participate in the competition in February, 16 districtwide student-volunteers from art, architecture, digital design and instrumentation and automation classes were assembled as a team under the direction of faculty adviser and architectural technology teacher Tanya Van Cott. The team was prompted to design/customize two pairs of Vans shoes to reflect the themes Local Flavor and “Off the Wall.”

The team’s two shoe submissions were BubbleGumYum, a pink and blue shoe that combined the classic Vans checkered pattern with Sewanhaka High School’s aeronautical and floral history; and TRU(blu), a purple and gold themed shoe that pays homage to the high school’s colors, which used a 3D drafted “Off The Wall” version of the Vans classic checkered pattern, creating a floral pattern.

Despite school closures due to the quarantine, Van Cott said that the team’s move to the digital space was seamless due to the students’ continued enthusiasm and interest in submitting their best work.
