The district held multiple graduation ceremonies throughout the day on July 25, in order to comply with the New York State Department of Health’s coronavirus pandemic regulations, at its five high schools: Elmont Memorial, Floral Park Memorial, H. Frank Carey, New Hyde Park Memorial and Sewanhaka.
Despite unusual circumstances, students, staff and parents/guardians were excited to join together to celebrate the graduating seniors. Students excitedly waved at teachers and friends they hadn’t seen in a while, honked their car horns from the nearby street where they watched the ceremony from afar, and decorated their caps with glitter and inspiring quotes.
The ceremonies were led by Principal Kevin Dougherty at Elmont Memorial, Principal Maria Hecht at Floral Park Memorial, Principal Christopher Fiore at H. Frank Carey, Principal Dr. Richard Faccio at New Hyde Park Memorial and Assistant Principal Frank Geritano at Sewanhaka. The graduations concluded with the students turning the tassels on their caps from right to left to mark their accomplishment.
“On behalf of the board of education and the central administration, we are so happy that we were able to provide a ceremony for our graduating seniors and their parents,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane said. “We wish each and every one of our graduates all the best life has to offer in the coming years.”
