New Hyde Park Memorial Earns Second Place at Medical Marvels

New Hyde Park Memorial High School’s science research team earned second place during Northwell Health’s Medical Marvels Research Competition, held on March 5.

The Medical Marvels program, which was established by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Center for Workforce Readiness, aims to encourage Long Island high school students in grades nine and 10 to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math career paths.

This year’s topic was “Gun Violence,” with a focus from the healthcare perspective. Students were tasked with creating a 3-minute video to present their proposal. They had to study mental health, education, economics and gun safety laws in order to come up with innovative ideas to help minimize the issue. The video presentation had to include a scientific research assessment, a means to communicate the plan to the community to promote awareness and a method to measure the effectiveness of the proposed plan. Due to the pandemic, the results were presented virtually, and the students were judged on their video submissions.

This year’s team was composed of six students from Angela Stone’s 10th grade class: Izhaan Ahmed, Elizabeth George, Sahara John, Priya Persaud, Ayesha Rashid and Paul Wang. The team received a $1,000 award.
