Elmont Memorial High School’s Select Chorale has been invited to perform at the National Association of Negro Musicians’ 100th anniversary in Chicago, from July 14-19.
This prestigious invitation welcomed the students to perform in the only Major Chorus Master Class offered during the event. Thirty students from the Select Chorale will perform an entire program of choral music from the classics to jazz. One or two of these selections will then be studied by a choral clinician before registered guests.
During a recent class rehearsal, students reflected on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and how important they felt it was to showcase their abilities.
“This is the 100th anniversary of the National Association of Negro Musicians, and we are going there to represent what people of color can do with our musical talents,” junior Jeremiah Omeike said.
As the students work hard to prepare for this important event, they are also raising money to make this trip a reality. If you would like to donate to this important cause, please contact Music Department Chairperson Anne-Marie Hudley-Simmons at: AHudleySimmons@sewanhakaschools.org
