Congratulations to Elmont Memorial’s Ekele Ukegbu for winning first place at the Roger Rees finals. Ekele will represent New York State at the Jimmy Awards on Monday, June 24.
Ekele competed for this honor after she and Shawn Springer advanced to the second round of the Roger Rees Award for their outstanding performance in “Aida.” The pair were two of 50 students selected from the New York City and Long Island areas to travel into New York City to receive professional training and perform and compete against the other students in contention.
Additionally, Ekele has received a $1,000 scholarship from the National Music Educators Association for her outstanding portfolio of work.
We are extremely proud of our scholars, and we congratulate the entire music department for helping them reach incredible heights within the performing arts. Thank you for all you do, and please congratulate Ekele and Shawn when you see them!
