On Nov. 8, the Elmont Memorial High School Guidance Department observed the National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The school counselors helped students of the Class of 2020 celebrate that they would be first in their families to attend college. Teachers who were also first-generation college attendees were called upon to share their journey, and the Guidance Department conducted a college admissions workshop after school to provide extra support to these students. The day was kicked off with a video message from First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as a video montage of Elmont students and staff. It was great as staff and students recognized "I'm First!"
