Music Students Participate in Workshop with Jazz Pianist

Students in the Senior High Orchestra and Music Theory classes participated in an amazing workshop featuring American Jazz pianist, composer and arranger Kenny Ascher.

Mr. Ascher is well known for his Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, “The Rainbow Connection” and Best Original Score from “The Muppet Movie” in 1980. The song was also nominated for a Golden Globe award the same year.

He performed for the students and walked them through his life’s journey of being a movie music composer. He shared insights and lessons he learned while composing music with Barbra Streisand and John Lennon, and the students enjoyed his live performance of “The Rainbow Connection,” which was originally and famously performed by Kermit the Frog.

This spring, the students in the Senior High Orchestra at Elmont High School are performing the song “The Rainbow Connection” as a tribute to this incredible composer.
