Floral Park Student-Thespians Nominated for Roger Rees Awards
Floral Park Memorial students Matthew Kenna, Tyler Palma and Bridget Russell have been nominated by the Broadway Education Alliance to compete for the title of best actor and best actress at The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance on Saturday, May 19 at Pearl Studios in Manhattan.
The three Floral Park Students will be members of a 50-student (25 men and 25 women) cast that represents 27 high schools located in Brooklyn, Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Orange, Rockland and Westchester Counties that have presented an officially licensed production of a Broadway musical during the 2017-2018 academic year. Bridget played Sandy, Matthew played Kenickie and Tyler played Danny in “Grease.” This production was adjudicated by a team of professional industry performers and/or educators who scored student performances according to a formal rubric.
To compete for the award, the students will participate in a performance master class taught by a team of Broadway professionals, followed by a talent showcase that will be judged by Celia Keenan-Bolger (“The Cherry Orchard,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “Peter and the Starcatcher”); Amy Rogers, director of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Musical Theater Program at Pace University; Merri Sugarman, Tara Rubin Casting; and Alton Fitzgerald White, Mufasa in Disney’s “The Lion King.”
Winners of the Roger Rees Award will represent the Greater New York region at The Broadway League Foundation’s Jimmy Awards (also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards) in June.
