Student stands next to their project

On May 1, Carey High School students in Science Research 2, 3 and 4 competed in the South Asian American Women's Alliance (SAAWA) High School Science Fair at the Merrick Golf Course. These students have been working on their own individual science research projects all year and had the opportunity to present their findings to scientists, professors and fellow students.  Winners will be announced at an award ceremony in June.

The following science research projects were presented:

* Emily Ieraci and Annmarie Schurr – The Effect of Natural vs Chemical Fertilizer on Hydroponically Grown Raphanus sativus and Eruca vesicaria

* Zaara Khan, Christopher Stacchini and Nicholas Sardes – The Effect of Malus Domestica & Musa Acuminata on Copper & Iron Sulfate Levels Using a Mesh Filter

* Chrisopher Dizon and Joseph Campisi – The Effects of Extracts; Rosemary, Lavender, and Elderberry on the Growth and Inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum

* Caroline Gilman, Michelle Zheng and Chiara Coffey – The Effect of Anabaena variabilis, Aspergillus niger, and E. coli, on the Biodegradation of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
