On Oct. 22, the varsity boys soccer team proudly joined the St. Baldrick’s Foundation in the fight to conquer childhood cancer. Each player was presented with a backpack as part of the Send Kids’ Cancer Packing initiative, raising awareness for children who are battling B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer.
Through groundbreaking research funded by St. Baldrick’s, a new immunotherapy treatment called blinatumomab (Blina) allows young patients to receive lifesaving medicine through a portable backpack for 28 days at a time. This innovative therapy helps children continue to live their lives outside of the hospital while fighting cancer.
By wearing the backpacks, the Knights are sending a powerful message of solidarity, showing young fighters everywhere that “they’ve got their backs.”
This special presentation symbolizes the team’s commitment to spreading hope and awareness beyond the soccer field. Joining the players on the sidelines for their Quarterfinal match against Wheatley will be four incredible local fighters — Tommy, Ben, Johnny and Danny — who embody the courage and strength of children everywhere facing this disease.
Since 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has granted more than $368 million to support the development of safer, more effective treatments for childhood cancers. The organization remains the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants worldwide.
