On Jan. 27, the art and literary magazine Trumpet, the Creative Writing Club and the National Art Honor Society met collaboratively for the first time after school. Ms. Poulos-Lutz, adviser of Trumpet, presented on ekphrasis, the practice of describing visual art through literary devices, as well as reverse ekphrasis, which involves creating visual art inspired by a literary work. Students viewed multiple examples of both forms to deepen their understanding of the concepts.
Prior to the meeting, Ms. Santana, adviser of the National Art Honor Society, encouraged one of her students to create artwork inspired by a Trumpet poetry submission. The student, Rowan Dejean, shared his beautifully executed and inspiring piece, which served as a strong example of the creative possibilities when FPM artists and writers collaborate. Mr. Demmers, adviser of the Creative Writing Club, along with Ms. Santana, encouraged students to consider creating ekphrastic writing and artwork for this year’s Trumpet publication. Following the presentation, students enthusiastically discussed plans for future collaboration. The meeting was an engaging and productive afternoon for all involved.
