Recognizing CTE Students, Musical Award Nominee and Staff

Sewanhaka Central High School District celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of students and staff during the board of education meeting on May 21.

Ex officio student board member Jasmine Chen, a junior at Floral Park Memorial High School, shared districtwide highlights during the monthly Student Report. Among the achievements highlighted were students completing more than 4,000 AP exams, wellness initiatives recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, and upcoming junior high and senior high school concerts.

Director of Career and Technical Education Dr. Patrick Dunphy presented highlights from the recent New York State SkillsUSA Conference, where more than 60 students from across the district participated and competed against more than 3,400 students statewide.

“SkillsUSA is more than just competitions; it gives students the chance to demonstrate technical skill, academic growth, leadership, professionalism, teamwork and confidence beyond the classroom,” Dr. Dunphy said.

Twenty-three CTE students were recognized for their achievements, including 14 first-place winners. The students were introduced by CTE teachers Shannon Bourgeois and John Kosinski.

Following the CTE recognitions, Superintendent Regina Agrusa honored Floral Park Memorial High School student Charlie Turner for being nominated for the prestigious Roger Rees Award for Outstanding Performer in a Musical.

Elmont Memorial High School was also recognized for earning a Best Communities for Music Education Award from the NAMM Foundation. The award celebrates individual schools and school districts for their dedication to music education and commitment to ensuring equitable access to music as part of a well-rounded education. Music Chairperson Andrea Galeno and music teachers Benjamin Pasenti and Daniel Guillaume were present to receive certificates of recognition.

The evening’s recognitions concluded with Assistant Principal Dr. Marc Isseks, who received a 2026 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. He was honored for his distinguished educational leadership and commitment to fostering successful outcomes for students.
