It was an evening of celebration and reflection as the district hosted its final board of education meeting of the 2025-26 school year on June 23.
The meeting began with ex officio student board member Christopher Sebber, a junior at H. Frank Carey High School, presenting the monthly Student Update, highlighting several end-of-year events including eighth grade moving up ceremonies, proms, award ceremonies and the last Superintendent’s Student Advisory meeting.
To showcase the many memorable moments of the school year, a “Year in Review” video was presented, celebrating students’ achievements and activities across the district.
The district expressed its appreciation to the 2025-26 ex officio student board members for their service this school year. The five students gained valuable civic engagement experience while providing a direct voice for student perspectives and opinions. The student representatives are Elmont Memorial High School’s Evangeline Moonsammy, Floral Park Memorial High School’s Jasmine Chen, H. Frank Carey High School’s Christopher Sebber, New Hyde Park Memorial High School’s Adam Abdullah and Sewanhaka High School’s Kyara Ozil.
Student recognitions continued with athletics, as Sewanhaka High School senior Zoe Amadike was honored for winning the New York State Championship in the Triple Jump. The Elmont Memorial High School boys’ 4x400 relay team, Jayson Bhoorasingh, Aidan Peterkin, Kaedon Trye and Jaiden Williams, was also recognized for capturing the New York State Championship title. Additionally, Aidan was honored for being the New York State Champion in the 400-meter dash.
The district proudly recognized 49 staff members for achieving the significant career milestone of receiving tenure.
“This achievement is a reflection of your hard work, resilience and the positive difference you have already made in countless lives,” Superintendent Regina Agrusa said. “While tenure marks a significant achievement, I encourage you to see it not as a destination, but as a crucial step on a continuous journey. Education is an ever-evolving field, and your tenure empowers you to innovate, grow and deepen your impact even further.”
Following the recognition of staff members who achieved tenure, the district paid tribute to the 19 esteemed employees who are concluding their careers with retirement this year. Together, these dedicated individuals have contributed nearly 500 years of combined service to the district.
“For educators who have always prepared students for their next steps, it is now your turn to embrace new adventures, new passions and personal growth,” Ms. Agrusa said. “This may be a final professional milestone, but it signifies the exciting beginning of endless possibilities.”
Among those concluding their service to the district are Board President William Leder and district clerk Joanne Murnane.
