juniors and seniors at spring mentoring day

The Academy of Finance hosted its annual Spring Mentoring Day for both juniors and seniors, on April 29.

Since 1988, New Hyde Park Memorial High School has been the home of this district program that gives students an opportunity to learn about and prepare for careers in financial services and business-related careers. It is one of several model programs established to promote educational excellence by the National Academy Foundation. The Academy of Finance is a partnership that links the resources of education, business and the community.

The Academy of Finance bridges the gap between the classroom and the workplace. It helps students develop career skills, evaluate their own potential for success and establish personal goals. It provides an enriched, elective four-year comprehensive academic program for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Working with each individual Academy of Finance program is an Advisory Board. The Board is comprised of prominent local business leaders from the community. Advisory Board members provide support and advice to guide the administration of the Academy program. Present at the meeting representing New Hyde Park Memorial was Business Education and Technology Chairperson Sara Zeppieri-Cervini, District Business Education Coordinator Jennifer Lehmann and Principal Dr. Richard Faccio.

The following community leaders became mentors to the Academy of Finance students:  Samantha Grenier (AoF Class of ’06), Northwell Health; Josh Printz of Citizens Bank; Christopher Vulpis, Rosenblatt, Levittan, Vulpis et.al; Richard DeMartino, past president of the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce; Jennifer Mulhall, vice president, BlackRock (AoF Class of ’97); Tim Leonard, senior director at Oppenheimer & Co. (AoF Class of ’95); Lisa Pagliaro, program manager at Catholic Charities; Peter Caputo of ERA Caputo Realty; and John Perrone from State Farm Insurance.

The Academy of Finance juniors are preparing to participate in their summer work-based learning experiences. The summer work-based learning experience is one of the main components and requirements for Academy of Finance students. It typically takes place the summer between junior and senior year, and requires the student to participate in 60 hours of work-experience.
