Student Poetry Winners Stand With Staff Members

Former U.S. Poet Laureate and 2022 Walt Whitman Birthplace Association Poet-in-Residence Natasha Trethewey presided over the WWBA's 36th annual student poetry contest on May 15. More than 2,100 students from around the world submitted works for consideration in a variety of categories. Many NHP students participated. Among those recognized at the awards ceremony were seventh grade student Nathaniel Abelarde, who received honorable mention for his poem The Renewal Bird, and ninth grade student Eliana Park who received honorable mention for her poem Glass Edge. Additionally, Mr. Otton's ninth grade English class was selected as the grand champion in the ninth and 10th grade anthology category for their collection “Once Again.”
