Seven Sewanhaka High School students attended the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) 2023 National Leadership Conference, from July 2-6.
Throughout the conference, attendees heard from keynote speakers, participated in leadership workshops, and competed in career-focused skill demonstration event competitions and team events that tested their knowledge in personal finance, consumer responsibilities, technology, health and safety. FCCLA members also networked with fellow youth leaders and learned more about future career and college options through exploring the career pathways of Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism, Education and Training, and Visual Arts and Design. This year, more than 8,000 members, advisers and supporters from across the nation attended the conference. FCCLA is a national Career and Technical Student Organization for students in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
Sewanhaka students Sheyla Alarco, Ashna Balroop, Win Hla, Catherine Krisenlall, Daisha Lespinasse, Emiley Muthusamy and Asmin Simsek were in attendance at the conference. Two team competitors placed top 10 in the country: Ashna and Win earned Gold in Public Policy Advocate, and Sheyla and Asmin earned Gold in Event Management. Additionally, Catherine earned Gold in Career Investigation, Emiley earned Silver in Job Interview and Daisha earned Silver in Professional Presentation.
Ashna and Win not only participated in the conference but were also presenters. They hosted a workshop entitled, “How to Become a Pillar of your Community: Finding Simple Ways to Give Back.” This workshop provided students from across the country with valuable and practical ways to get involved with their respective communities.
