Sewanhaka High School is proud to announce that eighth grader Momina Ali was named the Scripps Spelling Bee champion on Jan. 13.
Seventh and eighth grade students participated in in-class spelling tests and the top scorers advanced to their grade-level Spelling Bees. 23 seventh graders competed in the preliminary round, with Xavier Elcock-Lopez winning the seventh grade title, while 24 eighth graders competed, and Ali earned the eighth grade title. The two grade-level champions then faced off in a final round to determine the school’s champion.
Ali won by correctly spelling the word “silhouette” and will advance to the regional Scripps Spelling Bee in February.
