The district proudly hosted its 32nd annual Intra-District Model United Nations Conference on April 18 at Sewanhaka High School, welcoming approximately 250 students from all five schools to participate in this dynamic districtwide event.
The day began with an opening ceremony, featuring remarks from Principal John Kenny, Superintendent of Schools Regina Agrusa, New Hyde Park Memorial High School Chairperson of Social Studies Thomas Galvin, District Coordinator of Social Studies and Sewanhaka High School Chairperson Dr. Nicholas Simone, and Sewanhaka High School Class of 2016 graduate and former Model UN member Shaheer Khan.
Following the ceremony, students moved into their respective committees to begin debate. Taking on the roles of world leaders, participants debated critical issues, worked collaboratively to build consensus and proposed solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Delegates represented United Nations members, including Barbados, Cuba, Denmark, Fiji, France, Italy, South Africa and Sweden.
The United Nations Environment Programme addressed emergency response and infrastructure recovery for natural disasters; the Disarmament and International Security Committee examined artificial intelligence and military weapons in the digital age; the United Nations Children’s Fund focused on the rehabilitation of former child soldiers; the Security Council analyzed the Cuban Missile Crisis; and the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee explored the issue of maternal mortality.
Entirely student-run, the conference showcased leadership at every level, with participants serving as Under-Secretary Generals, committee chairs and delegates.
