Sewanhaka High School recently received a $10,000 grant from the New York Islanders.
Following the team’s announcement of grant opportunities, Principal John Kenny submitted a grant proposal focused on giving students more opportunities to unplug and socialize during lunch periods.
"The grant proposal focused on providing games and activities that would allow students opportunities to stay active, socialize and have fun during lunch and free periods, bringing a sense of ‘old-school’ play, interaction and camaraderie back to our school community,” Mr. Kenny said.
Sewanhaka received the grant funding from the Islanders Children’s Foundation, and five teachers were invited to attend an Islanders game at UBS Arena and meet the team’s owner. Brianne Giuliano, Casey Hayes, Samantha Romanello, Lena Demas and Deidre McIntyre attended the event and shared that the Islanders organization treated them like celebrities throughout the entire experience.
