The district hosted its annual Science Research Symposium at New Hyde Park Memorial High School on June 9. Students in grades 7-12 from all five buildings showcased their research projects, highlighting months of scientific inquiry and investigation. To recognize outstanding work, Science Research teachers selected one project from each building to be presented during the symposium.
Elmont Memorial High School senior Christina Bayne presented her project, Foraminiferal Records: Orbital Forcing Drives Western Pacific Warm Pool Surface and Thermocline Dynamics in the Bismarck Sea over the last 280 Kyr.” Floral Park Memorial High School 10th grader Falak Prajapati presented her project, “The Kastle Meyer Effect on DNA in Blood. H. Frank Carey High School senior Ryan Yim presented his project, “Predicting Thyroid Cancer Recurrence Using Machine Learning Models With Feature Selection.” New Hyde Park Memorial High School senior Hongxiang (Jackson) Kang presented his project, A Mobile App Controlled Automated Pill Dispenser Using Servo Motors for Reliable Medical Adherence.” Sewanhaka High School 11th graders Wenhan Wen and Nibin Varghese presented their project, Effectiveness of a Constructed Floating Wetland System Paired With a Biochar Filter on the Reduction of Nitrate Concentration.”
The event’s keynote speaker was New Hyde Park Memorial Class of 2017 graduate Narindra Persaud, who was published in his sophomore year for the study of “Local Sensitive Hashing and Neural Networks for Object Recognition.”
