In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 25th anniversary of September 11, New Hyde Park Memorial High School hosted a meaningful commemorative assembly on the front lawn of the school on the morning of Sept. 11.

The lawn was lined with 250 American flags, symbolizing the nation’s 250 years of history and service. Special guests from the Nassau County Police Department and New Hyde Park Fire Department joined students, staff and community members for the observance.

“Two hundred and fifty years ago, a bold group of people declared that liberty, self-government and the dignity of every person were ideals worth defending,” Principal Rosemary DeGennaro said during her opening remarks. “It is a story of courage and sacrifice, a story of triumphs and challenges. As we celebrate this historic milestone, we also pause to remember another anniversary that forever changed our country, another story of courage and sacrifice.”

Additional speakers included Superintendent of Schools Regina Agrusa, Social Studies Chairperson Thomas Galvin and Director of Student Activities Christine Vosswinkel-Blum, along with this year’s Poet Laureate Amy Rose Jigon who read the poem "The Names" by Billy Collins and student Bella Vyas who read her 9/11 reflection.

Musical performances further enhanced the program, with the band performing the National Anthem, the chorus singing “God Bless America” and the orchestra presenting “America the Beautiful.”

Together, the speeches, readings and musical tributes created a powerful reflection on both the nation’s history and the resilience and unity demonstrated in the wake of September 11.
