Annual Pink It Up Day and Pink Mile

The New Hyde Park Memorial High School community came together for two annual traditions in early October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Oct. 1, students and staff dressed in pink and gathered outside before the start of the school day to form a pink ribbon, a powerful symbol of hope, remembrance and support during Pink It Up Day. The school community’s efforts continued on Oct. 6 with the Pink Mile, during which students and staff walked four laps around the track, totaling one mile, to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and support services. As participants made their way around the track, the Pep Band provided live music, adding to the spirited atmosphere, while the first 100 participants received a complimentary pink donut. Through this year's events, the school raised $1,300 for the American Cancer Society and the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

The tradition was founded by English teacher Katie Kaspar, a cancer survivor whose courage and advocacy have inspired the school community for more than a decade. Since its inception, Pink It Up Day and the Pink Mile have become cherished annual traditions that bring students and staff together to raise awareness, honor survivors, remember loved ones and support those affected by breast cancer.
