SHS's Class of 2027 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Sewanhaka High School is pleased to announce that Nibin Varghese and Hailey Ball are the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2027.

Nibin exemplifies the balance of academic excellence, leadership and service. Throughout his time at Sewanhaka High School, he has challenged himself with a rigorous course load, earning recognition as an AP Scholar with Distinction. His passion for scientific inquiry is evident through his participation in the Science Research program from eighth through 12th grade, where he developed the analytical skills and curiosity that have defined much of his high school career. Beyond the classroom, Nibin has distinguished himself as a dedicated leader and active member of the school community. He serves as president of Science National Honor Society, vice president of Math Honor Society, officer of the Green Club and co-founder of the school’s Science Olympiad team. He also performs with the district’s competitive marching band, the Marching Knights of Sewanhaka. His pursuit of learning extends far beyond school. He completed a six-week clinical volunteer experience at Wholesome Medical Center, conducted studies with professors at Stony Brook University and gained valuable experience at New York-Presbyterian Columbia Irving Medical Center. In addition, he is certified through the American College of Surgeons' Stop the Bleed program, reflecting his interest in healthcare and helping others. Equally impressive is his dedication to service. For the past four years, he has volunteered through his local church, assisting with outreach initiatives and special events that support members of the community.

“Nibin is the epitome of academic excellence, leadership and character,” Principal John Kenny said. “He has distinguished himself through dedication to learning, commitment to serving others, and a genuine kindness and humility.”

Hailey is widely recognized for her outstanding academic achievement, leadership and commitment to her school community. While challenging herself with a rigorous course load that includes AP Chemistry, AP Research, AP Statistics and AP Calculus AB, she has earned distinction as an AP Scholar with Distinction. Beyond the classroom, Hailey has made a meaningful impact on student life through her initiative and leadership. Last school year, she helped revive the Mock Trial club after a two-decade hiatus, serving as a co-founder and creating new opportunities for students to strengthen their public speaking, critical-thinking and collaboration skills. Since joining Model United Nations in seventh grade, she has developed into an award-winning delegate, club president and under-secretary-general of the districtwide Model United Nations conference, SIDMUN. Among her most notable qualities is her dedication to mentoring younger students, encouraging them to build confidence and find their voice. Hailey's talents extend beyond academics and leadership. A creative and accomplished artist, she earned recognition in the CCE Nassau Gardening Calendar Annual Art Competition. She is also a gifted musician who has taught herself to play three instruments, further reflecting her curiosity and well-rounded character.

"Hailey is an outstanding student whose academic excellence, creativity and compassion truly set her apart,” Mr. Kenny said. “She understands that success is more than just grades; it’s about pursuing passion, lifting others up and making a positive difference in our community.”
